This upscale venue was the first in the Bishop Art's District to really do it right with regards to high end food. Prices are quite reasonable for what you're getting, which is high end gourmet eatin'

Huh. I've had snotty service every time I've been here. We call it Haughtys. I had an inedible risotto once, too. I will forever regret not immediately sending it back.
I go here when friends want to but never choose it myself.

Looking for something different to do outside of our Lakewood/Downtown lifestyle, last night we drove down to Bishop Arts District for a 6:30 reservation at Hattie's.
The bar and waiting area is small but really nice with comfortable looking chairs and a neat old bar. The bartender was making drinks behind the bar and we were greeted by the host. The restaurant only had a few tables of diners so we were shown right to our seat but I could see having to wait in this cute area wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. The whole restaurant had this modern yet southern charm.
We were shown to our table and the host pulled my chair out for me. After I sat, he discreetly took away my silverware that was wrapped in a white linen napkin and replaced it with silverware wrapped in a black napkin. I was wearing black pants... which they must have seen when I walked in and thought to replace my white linen napkin with a black one. Wow.
We sat down and decided to get 2 appetizers to split, the Fried Green Tomatoes (with AMAZING ranch dressing on top) and the pruscitto wrapped figs with blue cheese and walnut stuffing. Both were awesome. The fried green tomatoes had a cornmeal crust and were fried but not greasy at all. My dad also got the wedge salad... it had blue cheese, crisp pruscitto and small slivers of fried onion on top. Aaah. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and settled in.
For our main courses, amongst the five of us, we had the pecan crusted catfish, butcher block pork chop, pulled pork, and I got the special of scallops sitting on a bed of leek risotto. The scallops were cooked perfectly. It's rare you get perfectly cooked scallops... these had a nice sear on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. The risotto was okay... not very flavorful and I think could have been cooked just slightly longer. The al dente was borderline crunch. On top of the scallops was a small flurry of crisp leek. That was really nice-- the saltiness of the leek help to balance the rest of the dish, but I wish there was more leek flavor in the risotto itself.
Everyone else really liked their meals also. The pecan crusted catfish was amazing, and being on a bed of (awesome!) mashed potatoes was different. The pulled pork was cooked really nicely. It had caramelized onion marmalade on top that really helped balance the pork. We also got the famed four cheese macaroni and cheese for a side. Aaaaah. Make sure you get this when you come. It kind of felt like a $5 shake because it's $10 mac and cheese... but so worth it.
For dessert, we had a fried peach pie and port. By this time, the restaurant was completely full with a full bar. Hattie's being awesome is apparently NOT a secret, but you still feel like you've definitely found something special when you're there.

Good food and the atmosphere was really nice .. Had the Bison steak for $39 and I asked for some raw Jalapenos pepper and was charged $2.00 for it (it should have been free).. My wife had the Catfish and that was perfect ... The Banana Pudding was the best ..
In my talk thread looking for some Dallas help (
http://www.yelp.com/to...) Hattie's was mentioned for having some delicious mac 'n cheese. And guess what it does!
We walk in and we weren't really dressed for Hattie's but it was lunch time so I didn't really care. We are seated at a nice table for two, and I notice everything is very sleek and clean but with a southern twist to it.
We order two ice teas while we read the menu, granted I knew what I wanted their mac 'n cheese; I'm not the self proclaimed Queen of mac 'n cheese for nothing. Out of no wear the bread boy appears and we each have a slice of bread. The waiter reappears to take our order mac 'n cheese for me, he asks would you like shrimp or chicken added, my mouth started watering and I said yes please shrimp. My side kick went with the fried chicken salad with buttermilk dressing.
My mac 'n cheese is placed before me and it looks divine (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) I can't wait to dig in. It has that homemade look and with the four gulf prawns it looked like heaven on a plate for me. I dig in and it's one of the best mac 'n cheese I've ever had, the baked crispiness on top mixed with the green onions inside and the four cheddar cheeses melted together I couldn't have asked for anything better.
Fried chicken salad was looked like a piece of art (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). The chicken was wonderful no make that excellent, very flavorful no fat or gristle on it. The avocado was buttery and delicious and the dressing was outstanding.
If you're a lady and you're here check out the ladies room, it's a one room stale but I liked it. It's a bit on the dark side but it was very clean and fully stocked with a cute faucet (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) that does look a little phallic but it's cute.
The food was amazing and the décor was perfect on the other hand our waiter was just a little meh, he gave off the impression that he didn't care we were there for lunch. I guess my expectations of the wait staff here was just too high but their food more than made up for it.

This restaurant is a must-visit.
A mix of classic and contemporary southern atmosphere surround you while you enjoy an eclectic mix of southern favorites. But wait. This isn't your grandma's meatloaf... No, hers was never this sophisticated and delicious. In fact, fuck grandma. She has nothing on this place.
The food is familiar yet elegant - with traditional dishes embellished in ways you've probably never imagined. Try the jalapeno-stuffed quail! If you have it as an appetizer the first time, you will have it as an entree the next -- guaranteed.
The tomato bisque is smooth and creamy with a delicious mini grilled cheese playfully notched on to the lip of the bowl. There isn't a better tomato soup in Dallas.
And the mac and cheese.
O M G
W T F
So good. It's the holy grail of mac and cheese. Best in Dallas -- and I've been everywhere that serves it. Better than Perry's, Hibiscus, The Ritz or anywhere else. It's Dallas' favorite little "ironically elegant" side and no one does it better than Hattie's. This is a place I take my out-of-town friends and in-town friends alike. It's pricey, but worth it.
This is a place where you will see dressed-up black women in big hats after church, you will see families with young children celebrating milestones in their lives, you will see young couples on first dates, you will see grandmas having a luncheon and you will see emo kids at brunch after last night's show. It's for anyone with taste. Do you have taste? Then You will love it.
The service is helpful and has just the right amount of presence.
The only downside is that you have to traverse the ghetto to get to the restaurant. But hey, you don't get to buried treasure unless you grab a shovel and start digging.
Bottom line:
The food and service are amazing and there is nowhere like it in Dallas. Applies flair and much-needed elegance to a genre of food that Black-Eyed-Pea ruined. This is a "best of" pick for me. It will be for you too. 5 stars. I'd give it one more if I could.

Wow. I mean WOW.
I had a friend in town from the windy city and wanted to take her out to a place that would represent authentic flavor. I scrambled yelp at the last minute and, as always, yelp reviewers did not disappoint.
We arrived around 6:30pm on a Wednesday evening. The first thing I noticed as I entered the restaurant was how clean and fresh the interior decor was. In the waiting area were classy, dark wood chairs. Full bar was located to the right-hand side of the waiting area. Maître d' was very polite in greeting us and even though we did not make a reservation, there was no problem. I was very grateful because it filled up very quickly.
I found the decorations in the dining area to be immaculate and carefully thought-out with calla lilies against the walls and white table cloth on charcoal tables.
But enough about the interior. Food is where this place really shines.
We began with Friend Green Tomatoes which was an excellent starter that was light and combined the tartness and the creamy buttermilk ranch dressing well.
Low Country Shrimp and Grits! Mmmm~ Southern comfort food. Creamy grits accompanied by shrimp. And the Tobasco bacon pan sauce gives you a punch of flavor that is simply fantastic!
Jalepeno-stuff quail on a sweet potato mash. Now THIS is how you cook quail. THIS IS HOW YOU COOK!! Perfect blend of spicyness and sweetness with delicious quail meat melting in your mouth.
I am definitely going again. With such affordable price of ~$25/person, I'm more than ready to splurge with somone a little more special than a college buddy. With a bottle of wine, a dinner cannot get any more romantic than here.

WOW - that about sums it up. Our dinner was incredible, from the service to the French Martinis to the entrees. Best meal we've had in our two week tour of Texas. So good that we made reservations to return tomorrow night with a larger party of folks. Maybe I'll even save room for dessert next time.
This is a must when in Dallas.

Oh my goodness, I loved this place
Just went the other day because I work in the ghetto Oakcliff but went to lunch w/ the brother of the lady I work for and it is soooo adorable. I love the front area and if they put some black & white pictures up like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra then it would really make it warmer.
The bar is sooo adorable
I don't care for the mirrors while you eat and the long booth but other than that it is simply perfect.
Very "Old Fashion" sort of in a modern way, the food was good and the service was good except our waiter I had to put in place just a tad because he kept rushing us a bit as well as not really there so since it was a late lunch I thought he might be needing to go so I mentioned he most likely wants to close up so he can get out before two so that changed his tone because he was like noooo you know how they do and then he slowed his role a bit.
I appreciate the place and to be honest would love to go in the evening for a little cocktail hour w/ girlfriends. So fun LUV IT!!!

One word: PERFECT.
This may be one of my longest reviews, so here goes.
Came here for mother's day at 11am and already there were about 3 other families doing so. Except I was the smarter one and made reservations way ahead.
So, it's the six of us seated inside the beautiful white interior designed place. My sister said, it kinda has a Nantucket feeling.
Here's the food breakdown:
1. Awesome freshly squeezed orange juice. Awesome.
2. Got the special (chicken on top of a Belgian waffle) which was divine. Used their special syrup which they put pepper flakes, which was highly unusual but the combination did work.
3. Poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce with crab cakes was delicious. The flavors all just came together.
4. I also tried my husband's veal meatloaf and it just melted right into my mouth.
5. Coffee was excellent too.
Didn't have any desserts b/c I bought a large asst. cheesecake from Cheesecake Royale instead.
Yes, even the bathroom was beautiful.
Without a doubt it was a wonderful dining experience and I cannot wait till I come here again.

Brought a friend from school down so she could see Dallas is more than Richardson...haha
After peeking in at the various overpriced stores, we stopped here for dinner. The restaurant is really pretty and cool Southern elegance as Glenn and others have described.
The waiter brought us bread, I like how they only give you one slice at at time honestly, less wasteful. We started with the bacon wrapped oysters that everyone here has mentioned. They were good, and I really liked the cole slaw underneath, I kinda wish the horseradish they use was a bit stronger, but that's just me.
For our entree we split the shrimp and grits. Perfect sized portion for 2 and we were both STUFFED. The grits were creamy and smooth and the shrimp were a good size and quite tasty. I loooove the tomatoey tobasco sauce mixture, such a great flavor.
I would have loved to try dessert, gotta bring more people next time!
Oh yeah and our waiter Joe was cool too!

I recently dined at this place while visiting Dallas. The bright, modern interior is quite a contrast from the old, artsy exterior. To my surprise, the wait for brunch on a weekend for 6 people was only about 20 minutes. The service was terrific. The food was pretty good; here are our favorites: breaded pork cutlet and fried eggs with sweet potato hash browns, poached eggs on Hattie's crab cakes with hollandaise, buttermilk fried chicken on a waffle (a special), and sweet potato fries. For dessert, we shared the pecan pie with chocolate and coconut, which I was not as impressed with. The chocolate and coconut meant to dress up a regular piece of pecan pie, but it just made it look like one of those ultra-glam celebrities who don't know how to dress. (If there was a food issue of People's Magazine for the mismatched, this could be an honorable mention.)
By the way, I don't know about the mens' restroom, but the faucet in the womens' restroom was kinda phallic...I won't take a star off for that though.
1 star off: trying too hard on the pecan pie

Yum! Loved this place!
I came here with a very large group for a holiday celebration.
Service was very attentive, and our 20 person dinner went off without a hitch! Valet parking also made this visit convenient too.
Atmosphere: I really liked the refined dining room and the casual bar area. The bar area has these antique-looking (but comfy) large chairs. I also really enjoyed the fact that the restaurant is located in the Bishop Arts District - such a cool, unique area in Oak Cliff!
Food: We ordered the mac and cheese as a group appetizer, and it vanished within 3 minutes! So that is definitely something I'd suggest. I also tried the bacon wrapped friend oysters - they were a bit firm, but I'd recommend those as well. I also tried the shrimp and grits with a red sauce. It was my first time having this dish - and I thought it would be spicy or have really big flavors, but next time I think I'll order the fried catfish.
I'd definitely recommend going to Hattie's regardless if you're celebrating a special occasion or just having a casual dinner.

Boy oh boy have I died and gone to heaven? That was exactly how I felt after the finger-lickin' meal I had at Hattie's. Always a lover of all things fried, I am always in search of an authentic soul/southern food experience and I think I have finally hit the jackpot with Hattie's.
My boyfriend and I woke up this morning with a brunch hankering for fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, fried anything really. Let me clarify, while Hattie's does not shy away from the use of a deep fat fryer, nothing we ate was overly greasy. Rather, I would venture to say that both my fried green tomato sandwich, my boyfriend's fried chicken and waffles, and my bacon wrapped fried oysters were all crisped and seasoned to perfection. When I say perfection, I am talking the kind where you have to close your eyes and hold your breath it tastes so good. Being the foodies we are, my boyfriend and I ordered all of the aforementioned food as well as a cup of the tomato soup that came with the cutest little grilled cheese sandwich you ever did see. The soup was creamy, flavorful, and delicious, although my boyfriend agreed with me when I said that our grilled cheese was one of the tastiest I have ever had, but not hot enough. I wanted to bite into it and pull strings of melty, smoked cheddar from my mouth, but the sandwich wasn't hot enough to do so.
All in all, I would say this dining experience was one of my favorite in all of Dallas. Located in the quaint Bishop Arts District, Hattie's is a great choice for an exceptional, affordable Southern meal!! I only wish I lived here so I could enjoy this meal over and over again.

The Bishop's Art district is a really fun place to walk around. I would not stray to far from its borders, but the shops and the area all have a great appeal to any one who loves artsy neighborhoods.
In the middle of this Oasis of art galleries and interesting shops you ll find Hattie's. We arrived around 1200 on Sunday for a fabulous brunch and dining experience. We did not have reservations and waited for about 5 minutes for our table. We waited in the Bar area and we each ordered a Bloody Mary, one virgin and one straight. They were served with a trio of condiments; a lime, a cherry tomato, and a pickled okra. Really hit the spot! After consuming my beverage I realized how amazing the decor of this restaurant is. The look of the restaurant def has that southern classic feel to it. The tiled white and black floors, the shabby sheik paint and the white pillars really transforms you to real southern hospitality. The only thing missing was mint juleps and Colonel Sanders.
I would describe the food here as Southern Nouveau Soul Food. The brunch menu has a wide variety for your sweet tooth or the meat eater. We had trouble deciding what to order and just ordered a bunch. We started with the Tomato soup which is a don't miss. It was classically paired with a cute little grilled cheese sandwich. The sandwich could have been hotter but the smoked Cheddar and the crispy bread were a perfect vehicle for the velvety tomato soup. Next we had to try the Fried green tomato sandwich with sweet potato fries. YUM! The tomatoes were fried to perfection with a cornmeal batter and topped with a decent mozzarella cheese. The fries were def the star of this plate. Don't get french fries or onion rings! Get the sweet potato fries! We tried a half of the sandwich and bagged it up for later that day. Lastly, I had never tried chicken and waffles before and on Sunday's it is one of their specials so some one should order it! It was great, everything I dreamed of and more! The breast was perfectly fried and the waffle was great. It was served with a chili maple syrup which i found good enough to dose my chicken with. My girlfriend ordered the scramble. It came with 6 BACON wrapped oysters. You wrap poop in bacon and its gonna be good, hehe! The oysters were great. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the potatoes served with it were also great!
I cant wait to come back here for dinner! This is def the best spot for brunch in Dallas!

This is THE BEST resturaunt in Dallas. It's prices are cheap and the menu is VERY interesting and always delicious.
The Catfish is the star here, if it's your first time order it. I don't care if you don't like fish, or catfish. It will be one of the best food items you've ever eaten in your life...
Only thing I don't like about this place is that on weekends it gets very busy and it's a bit less casual than it should be considering it's neighborhood feel and location.
I love Oak Cliff though and this is a great place to go to avoid the douchebag Frisco crowd.
ONE MORE THING: THE TOMATO BISQUE is a requirement on your order. It will be the best tomato Bisque you've ever had.

Talk about overhyped. Sure, the floors and southern look are cool. But it's not that special. Your fried chicken salad isn't very good (the lettuce isn't very good). Go to the Porch for an amazing fried chicken salad.
I had a soft shelled crab sandwich once. It was good for a little bit. Then the crab became too slimy.
I just feel like this place is overhyped. You're much better off going to Tillman's down the street. That place brings something different to the table and has a great atmosphere.

When I was driving to Hattie's, I could've sworn my GPS was taking me the wrong way because I was going through some pretty shady areas. Then I walked into the restaurant and it was like walking into Narnia. Seriously, you're out on the street in shady-ville, and then you walk into Hattie's and you're in a super-immaculate restaurant. Crazy. The inside of the restaurant is very fancy and has a contemporary/modern feel to it that isn't overwhelming or anything like that. This would be a good place for a quiet, romantic dinner.
The menu has a lot of very unique things on it - I got the impression it's classical Southern cooking mixed with a little bit of modern flair.
I tried the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer. They were okay, but really weren't anything spectacular. One of the other appetizers probably would have been much better.
Then I got my entree - grits with shrimp, goat cheese, and a "tabasco bacon pan sauce." Wow. This was one of the best dishes I've had during my short time in Dallas. There were so many different flavors in it, and they all complemented one another perfectly to make the dish fantastic. The portion was a good size - enough to fill you up, but not too big.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend Hattie's as a place to check out. They have a lot of unique and interesting dishes, and I know that I'll definitely be coming back to try more of them the next time I'm in Dallas.

I did not travel much when I was younger so I had little frame of reference about other area outside of L.A. If you had asked me to describe how I imagined an elegant little Southern restaurant, I would have conjured up something like Hattie's. When you walk in to the dining room and experience the perfectly set tables all adorned in immaculate, white linen tablecloths and napkins, and are greeted by a wait staff impeccably dressed all in black, you automatically get a sense of elevated style. There are no affectations of attitude, however, and with the light of the setting sun engulfing the space, it actually feels quite cozy.
I came in wanting to absolutely love Hattie's but everything just seemed to fall a little short. Admittedly, I have been lucky to eat at some pretty fantastic places in the last few months and Hattie's just didn't quite live up to the best of that bunch, at least from a food standpoint. The service was outstanding.
The fried green tomato appetizer was deemed a little firmer and less flavorful than some other versions. The shrimp and grits was very good. The grits were perfectly prepared and the Tabasco/bacon sauce was a huge plus but it was hard not to compare it to a similar dish had at Emeril's NOLA 2 weeks ago that blew my mind with its quality and flavor.
I had heard a lot about Hattie's pulled pork and was eager to sample it. I selected the version that came embedded into a hamburger because that sounded like heaven. Several months back I had this type of dish at Red, Hot, and Blue and it rocked. Sadly, Hattie's version featured a burger that was bland and severely overcooked. What little pork was present was juicy and hinted at a pleasant Carolina style taste which would have been better enjoyed by itself (The pork is available as a dinner with grits, which would have been a superior choice).
Key Lime pie was served for dessert and was delicious with one slight complaint. The graham cracker crust is made with walnuts and the bitterness from the nuts could not be escaped. In fact, it actually detracted from the wonderful filling. I would suggest the Key Lime martini instead. This was voted the best in D magazine and it lived up to the hype. The glass is rimmed with regular graham crackers which is the perfect complement for the tasty but tart lime.
A couple of things to keep in mind: Hattie's is certainly worth visiting but make sure you have a reservation. I've heard that if you don't, you will wait forever, even if there are empty tables. I saw it happen to a foursome last night. The service makes it a pleasant dining experience. Lastly, the prices are extremely reasonable. Sure the shrimp and grits at NOLA's was better but it also cost almost $30 not the $12 that Hattie's charges. So go enjoy Hattie's. Just take a pass on the burger.

On my five-day visit to D/FW, I'd been pleased but not overly impressed with a number of other places (Monica's, Railhead, Jusmex, Alligator Cafe), and was about to give up on finding anything special. Then we went to Hattie's.
We called Hattie's at 6:30 on a Friday and the first table was at 9:45 -- a good sign. We got there and it was jumping -- the crowd all seemed to know the staff. Plenty of overdressed, even vulgar nouveau-riche patrons -- thankfully, this didn't go along with bad food and service.
The service was brisk and efficient, but notably minimalist -- not much chit-chat -- unusual and interesting.
Fried green tomatoes and bacon-wrapped oysters for appetizers. Tasty.
We shared three dishes for mains.
The four-cheddar mac and cheese was remarkable - you could taste each individual cheese, even as they harmoniously joined in a cheddar symphony. My expert colleague observed that the temperature was perfectly balanced from top to bottom - they didn't overheat it while browning the top into a yummy crisp.
Pulled pork also delicious -- accompanying grits were unbelievably subtle and powerful.
Catfish too -- by the end, I wanted to weep because although overstuffed from a week of Texas-sized portions, I couldn't bring myself to leave even a single morsel of catfish on the plate.
They wrapped up significant parts of two dishes for us to take home. At these prices, Hattie's is an absolute steal!

What an amazing meal! My only regret is that I couldn't eat more. The food is typical American Bistro style food with a clear Southern/home-cooking influence. You'll find things on the menu like fried green tomatoes, shrimp with grits, and pulled pork. Everything is done exquisitely, though. Presentation is fabulous, the food is fresh, the flavors are preserved through careful cooking, and the service is friendly and genuine.
I also found the prices to be really low for the quality of the food. My shrimp and grits was only $16 and the pulled pork was a mere $12 for the entree! Also, though we didn't have reservations, the owner was able to squeeze us in and even came back to the table to check on us.
I wish they'd open up a restaurant like this in SF!

Tasty, expensive and creative home cooking in the heart of the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff. Well, it is not really that pricey, just expensive for home cooking. This area is up and coming but you still have to travel through some shady areas to get there. Once you do, you will be happy you did.
The food is wonderful and the decor, while simple, is elegant and classy with a modern twist. Not a single person had a complaint about their food and we had a big party. The service was also very attentive. For an out of the way, unique experience, Hattie's is recommended.
